چکیده

Haptic display with force feedback is often necessary in several virtual environments. To enable haptic rendering of large datasets we introduce Continuously-Adaptive Haptic Rendering, a novel approach to reduce the complexity of the rendered dataset. We construct a continuous, multiresolution hierarchy of the model during the pre-processing and then at run time we use high-detail representation for regions around the probe pointer and coarser representation farther away. We achieve this by using a bell-shaped lter centered at the position of the probe pointer. Using our algorithm we are able to haptically render one to two orders of magnitude larger datasets than otherwise possible. Our approach is orthogonal to the previous work done in accelerating haptic rendering and thus can be used with them.

Real-time Adaptive Prediction Method for Smooth Haptic Rendering

In this paper, we propose a real-time adaptive prediction method to calculate smooth and accurate haptic feedback in complex scenarios. Smooth haptic feedback is an important task for haptic rendering with complex virtual objects. However, commonly the update rate of the haptic rendering may drop down during multi-point contact in complex scenarios because high computational cost is required fo...

An Experimental Study of Perceived Instability During Haptic Texture Rendering: Effects of Collision Detection Algorithm

This paper presents a quantitative characterization of the instability that a human user often experiences while interacting with a virtual textured surface rendered with a force-reflecting haptic interface. Psychophysical experiments were conducted to measure the maximum stiffness under which virtual textured surfaces were perceived to be stable in a variety of conditions differing in texture ...

Smooth force rendering on coarse polygonal meshes

Piecewise linear polygonal model has only G continuity, thus users can easily feel the edges when using haptic device to touch a solid represented by coarse polygonal meshes. To produce an appealing haptic sensation for smooth solids, a large number of polygons are needed in conventional approaches. This, however, slows down computation and consumes much more memory. In this paper, we present a...
